With the intent to reduce the carbon footprint in the city and to increase the green cover, Rotary Club of Coimbatore City joined hands with Nirmala College for Women to create 10 lakh seed-balls.
The seed balls were prepared and assembled at Nirmala College of Women near Sungam on Wednesday (6.12.23). Nearly 4000 people including 3000 students of the college were involved in making these seed-balls. These seeds balls would be dispersed in the forest areas that surround Coimbatore within 2 months.
Kaneshan, President, Rotary Club of Coimbatore City said that they took 20 students of the college to TNAU, Coimbatore to get trained on making seed-balls in the proper way. These students trained 300 other students, and the latter educated 2500+ students about making seed balls.
He further said that they consulted with the Forest Department officials to know what sort of seeds would grow well in the areas where they plan to bomb the seeds. After getting their suggestion, seeds of trees such as Poovarasan Tree, Gooseberry Tree, Bamboo Tree, Kadambu Tree (Neolamarckia cadamba) etc. were chosen. There is a minimum 50-60% chances for these seeds to grow successfully.
He added that they are in plans to send this noble and painstaking attempt to multiple record books including Limca Book of Records and India Book of Records.
Rotary Club of Coimbatore City, Nirmala College for Women, Nan Sei Foundation and Canele Walls provided the needed financial assistance this initiative required.
