At least 30% of migrant labours working in various Industries in Coimbatore who went to their hometowns to celebrate Holi have not returned to the factories here, causing difficulties to employers in completing their work orders from various parts of the country and other territories.

Coimbatore hires more than 1 lakh migrant labours, as many employers consider them to readily available and easier to manage than the labourers here.

A huge portion of these migrant labour community in Coimbatore went to their hometowns by the end of February to celebrate Holi but due to some reasons, more than 30% of them are yet to return.

Their absence has slowed down work in various industries, and the employers are now in plans to bring them back by even through planes.

While the real reason for their absence is yet to be ascertained, it is assumed that a portion of them could be under fear due to the fake news that spread in March 2023. It claimed that northerners are manhandled in Coimbatore and in other parts of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu government took several steps to assure the migrant workers that it was rumour and they are in safe hands.

In spite of this, a considerable portion of the migrant workers have not returned to their respective factories. Hence, some of the employers here, according to sources, have planned to  bring them here through planes, and also give them a hike in salary and other offers.

While air-tickets could be as high as Rs. 12,000 per head, the employers are planning to even go for that in order to complete their orders from different parts of India and the globe.
