South Tamil Nadu's 1st Private Mother's Milk Bank donates nearly 3 lakh ml of breast milk to 250 infants in 1 year 

 

In just 1 year, South Tamil Nadu’s first private Mothers’ Milk Bank called 'Nectar of Life' established at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital (SRH) with the support of Rotary Club of Coimbatore – Cotton City in Aug.2021 collected 4 lakh+ ml of Milk and freely distributed nearly 3 lakh ml to 250 infants, toddlers and children deprived of this precious nectar, not just at SRH but across the District of Coimbatore.

 

To celebrate the first anniversary of this private Mother's Milk Bank and its huge contribution to children and mothers, a celebration was held on Monday at SRH.

 

Rajmohan Nair, DG, RI Dist.3201, R.Sundar, Joint-Managing Trustee, SNR Sons Charitable Trust presided. Rtn.Dr.Neetika Prabu, Chairperson, Nectar of Life and other members of the organizing team of the bank and Rotary participated.

 

The Bank functions to bring the life-saving breast milk, which is considered a Nectar, to nourish the children who need external source of breast milk due to the mothers delivering pre-term babies facing difficulties in lactating or the mother may be sick, distanced from the baby due to surgery or other medical reasons. 

 

The volunteers of the bank (called Nectar Bees) collect the milk from donors, pasteurize it for the removal of bacteria and then deep-freeze it for storage before it is given to infants in need.

 

More than 90% of the funding needed for this project was made by Rotary Cotton City (Rs.14.51 lacs).

 

A press release mentioned that to Rotary Club of Coimbatore Cotton city had donated a vertical deep freezer with storage bottles and disposable bags to the bank at the celebration, and also honoured the mothers who donated the milk over the past 1 year.
