Coimbatore City Police have intensified works to install Safety Poles equipped with CCTV cameras and emergency communication feature in bus stops in the city under the Safe Kovai initiative.

To enhance safety of women in public spaces, especially at bus stops, Coimbatore City Police launched this initiative on Women's Day 2025. Under this initiative, dedicated safety poles equipped with camera surveillance system and emergency call features are being installed in 200 bus stops in Coimbatore City.

Each safety pole is connected to the City Police Control Room. So when a women or a child feels distress near bus stops, they can press the button in the pole to speak to the city police and explain their issue to the staff designated to handle the communication from these poles round the clock. Once such a call comes from these poles, the staff at the control room will  listen to the caller, continue to monitor the area, and immediately alert the nearby cops patrolling in that area.

The target is to cover 200 bus stops in the city with the support from CSR grants. Sources mentioned that the such safety poles are being installed in various parts of the city already, and the efforts have been intensified to install the poles in 148 bus stops.
