United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) observes the International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as World Heritage Day every year on April 18th. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about cultural heritage, promoting its preservation, and celebrating the diversity of human-made and natural environments.
UNESCO recognized Nilgiri Mountain Railway/Ooty Toy Train as a World Heritage Site for its historical, cultural and engineering significance.
The train was first operated in 1899 during the period of British Occupation from Mettupalayam to Coonoor as steam-engine powered train. It was then extended till Ooty. It remains a strong tourist attraction, pulling tourists not just from the local and regional areas but also from different countries.
As a part of World Heritage Day celebrations, the train was decorated with flowers and the railway department celebrated the occasion by cutting cake and giving sweets to passengers.
