The works under first phase of Coimbatore Western Bypass project is now 72% over, and highways department officials are in plans to complete this phase entirely in August 2025 including laying roads for the whole 11.80 kilometers.
The 32.42 km long, four lane bypass which begins at Mayilkal/Madukkarai and ends at Narasimhanaickenpalayam, is designed to take the vehicles heading to Mettupalayam, Ooty and Mysuru from Kerala through it, thereby reducing the traffic snarls inside the city.
The first phase is from Madukkarai (Mayilkal) to Madhampatti (11.80 kms). The second phase, from Madhampatti to Kanuvai (12.10 kms) and third phase, from Kanuvai to Narasimhanaickenpalayam (8.52 kms).
The first phase works began in August 2023 and is now expected to be over in August 2025. The State Government has already allocated a fund of Rs.348 crore for the Phase 2 of the project during the 2025 TN budget session.
However, the amount is set to be released after Administrative Sanction, and it is yet to be given. Only when that happens, the tender for Phase 2 works will be announced, and its related tasks will be executed. Land acquisition for Phase 2 is almost over while lands are being acquired for Phase 3.
Sources mentioned that the 32.42 km bypass may have toll plazas and State Highways department officials have already began examining the possibilities. Only if it is found feasible, the plazas would be setup in the bypass.
