Getting required amount of blood for a friend or a family member during his/her emergency treatment is a challenge for many. This situation is present everywhere, at the same time steps are taken to reduce these moments.

To further decrease such occasions in Coimbatore, Karur Vysya Bank (KVB), in association with the VGM Foundation, inaugurated the KVB VGM Foundation Blood Bank at the 150 bedded VGM Multi-Speciality Hospital, Trichy Road, Coimbatore on Saturday.

Pavankumar Giriyappanavar, IAS, District Collector, Coimbatore took part as the Chief Guest while Ramesh Babu, MD & CEO of KVB participated as the Guest of Honor of the inaugural and made the inauguration in the presence of Dr.V.G.Mohan Prasad, Chairman; Dr.Suman, Head of Orthopaedics and Dr.Mithra Prasad– Hepatologist and Head of Liver & Kidney Transplant, VGM Hospital, Coimbatore.

During the event, Dr. V.G.Mohan Prasad told the reporters that this blood Bank has been built as a  state of the art center with equipment imported from Germany at a cost of Rs.1.07 crore sponsored by KVB.

The doctor further said that the government has fixed Rs.1550 as the charge for a unit of blood. As KVB VGM Foundation Blood Bank is a charitable center, they are planning to provide a unit at Rs.1100- 1200. He added that the bank will provide blood at free of cost to the poor who cannot afford it.

“The 1,800 sq. ft. facility is one of the most modern blood banks in the region, equipped with advanced technology for collection, component separation, apheresis, storage, and screening, in compliance with stringent regulatory standards for safety, quality and efficiency. It is designed to cater to both emergency and routine needs of patients across Coimbatore and surrounding districts, playing a crucial role in critical care, surgeries, trauma cases, oncology, haematological disorders, and maternal emergencies” said Dr.Suman.

District Collector Pavankumar IAS, while delivering a special address, congratulated VGM Foundation for taking up this noble project on this World Blood Donors Day. This center will be an additional strength to hospitals and patients when the emergency help is required.  

Earlier people used to hesitate to donate blood due to doubts and unwanted fears but now that has changed. Today, many people are willing to donate blood to support patients, and this facility will encourage people further, he opined.
