World Cancer Day 2025: Sri Ramakrishna Hospital's SRIOR releases Unique Digital Flipbook on Common Cancers

Sri Ramakrishna Hospital – Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology & Research (SRIOR) marked World Cancer Day 2025 on Tuesday (4.2.25) by launching an innovative Digital Flipbook on common cancers in English and Tamil. The event also saw the inauguration of a free month-long prostate cancer screening program.
Dr.K. Karthikeyan, Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore District, presided as the Chief Guest and unveiled the flipbook along with R. Sundar, Managing Trustee, SNR Sons Charitable Trust, in the presence of Narendran, Joint Managing Trustee, SNR Sons Charitable Trust; Dr. P. Guhan, Director, SRIOR; Dr. Rajagopal, Dean, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital; Dr. K. Karthikesh, Surgical Oncologist, SRIOR; C. V. Ramkumar, CEO, SNR Sons Charitable Trust, and other dignitaries.
Welcoming the gathering to this 22nd World Cancer Day event of SRIOR, Dr. P. Guhan shared that the newly launched Digital Flipbook offers comprehensive, easy-to-access information on common cancers such as breast, lymphoma, lung, testicular, prostate, leukemia, head & neck, stomach, ovarian, multiple myeloma, brain, cervical, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer.
The flipbook, available via a dedicated QR code and website (https://mhits.in/SRIOR/WCD_2025/index.html), is designed to replicate the experience of reading a physical book, with smooth page transitions. It provides detailed insights into each cancer type, its causes, symptoms, treatment options, prevention strategies, and management tips.
The free month-long prostate cancer screening program will be provided on all working days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during February 2025.
Talking about India’s rising cancer burden, he said that the annual cases have surged from 12 lakh in 2020 to 15.2 lakh in 2025, with 5-10 lakh deaths each year. Breast cancer (urban women) and cervical cancer (rural women) are the most prevalent cancers among Indian women. Head & neck cancer and lung cancer are the leading cancers among Indian men, with tobacco use causing over 50% of cases.
Referring to a study, he said the report indicates that 1 in 9 Indians will develop cancer in their lifetime, hence awareness about cancer and early screening are crucial.
Dr. Guhan urged people to prioritize preventive screenings, including Low-dose CT scans for smokers over 50; Prostate cancer screenings for men over 60; Colonoscopy for men over 50 with a family history of colorectal cancer, Annual mammograms and Pap smear tests for women over 40.
R. Sundar, Managing Trustee, SNR Sons Charitable Trust, delivered the Presidential Address. He shared that a WHO survey states that Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world however if the society is sensitized about the precautionary measures, great number of lives could be saved.
Hence we all should come together and create awareness among the public about cancer preventive measures. He also said that in the era of information, there is a wide spread of misinformation about cancer and ways to cure it. The digital flipbook launched by SRIOR today has all the accurate details about cancer given by oncologists. He then congratulated Dr.Guhan and team for continuously creating awareness about cancers for 22 years innovatively.
Dr.K.Karthikeyan, SP, Coimbatore in his address said that with the advancement of medical science and technology today, there is a white range of treatments available for cancer patients. However utmost important should be given to the preventive aspect.The potential to cure cancer becomes thin when patients arrive with advanced stages of cancer. Hence, greater emphasis should be given to prevention of the disease, he opined.
Referring to SRIOR's 2 decades of continuous cancer awareness creation intiatives, he said creating such an awareness for 22 years requires enormous will and perseverance, and it should be appreciated.
