One of the highly anticipated power projects in Coimbatore city is reportedly getting cancelled, at least for now.
Coimbatore Corporation was in plans to set up a massive 25 MW solar power plant at a 50-acre site in Vellalore Dump Yard at a cost of Rs.150 crore. At present Coimbatore Corporation pays in several crores per month for electricity usages. It operates public street lights, STPs and other public amenities hence it pays approximately Rs.10 crore every month.
It was said that once this solar power plants becomes operational, the corporation would witness a significant reduction in its EB charges, and after 6-7 years of functioning, tCoimbatore Corporation EB bill would be Zero.
However, sources shared that the State Government has rejected this plan of the city corporation. A report mentioned that the state government cancelled this project as the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board showed hesitation to procure electricity generated by the Solar Power Plant. The project is also said to have got stuck at the Finance Department, resulting in its cancellation.
On the other hand, a report has been given to execute projects in South Zone of the city under Union Government Scheme at a total cost of Rs.120 crore, and this solar power plant project has also been included in it. So there is hope.
