Team Yuva of Young Indians (Yi) Coimbatore, in collaboration with Team Road Safety, successfully organized the Grand Finale of the Road Safety Short Film Contest at Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT).
The contest was aimed at encouraging students to creatively highlight the significance of road safety and responsible driving through the medium of short films. The event was honored by the presence of A. Saravana Sundar IPS, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In his address, the Commissioner spoke about the impact of road accidents in the state. He said that In Tamil Nadu, road accidents claim nearly 15,000 lives every year. In Coimbatore alone, over the last eight months, 16 lives were lost to heinous crimes, while road accidents claimed 180 lives — over ten times as many.
He noted that Coimbatore currently ranks 28th in India for road accidents, and stressed the urgent need for collective action to bring this number down. He congratulated Young Indians for driving a visual representation through short films which will make the impact of road safety awareness higher.
The contest witnessed participation from students across several reputed colleges in Coimbatore, who showcased their storytelling prowess with themes that underscored safety, responsibility, and awareness on the roads.
At the finals, the video 'Death End' by Prashanth and Team from GRD College of Science won the 1st prize. 'Nidhaanam' by Aravindh and Team from KPR College of Arts, Science & Research, and 'The Birthday Gift' by Thinakara and Team, Hindustan College of Engineering & Technology won the second and third prize respectively.
