Coimbatore Eastern bypass, proposed for a distance of 81 kms from Narasimhanaickenpalayam to Kaniyur and further till Madukkarai, will link all the six major National Highways in Coimbatore (Mettupalayam road -NH181, Sathyamangalam road -NH948, Avinashi road - NH544, Trichy road -NH81, Pollachi road -NH83 and Palakkad road -NH544. Similar to the Coimbatore Western Bypass road, this project too will facilitate alternate route for vehicles traveling to and from Kerala.

The project was first announced during the ADMK-regime in 2016. At that time, NHAI decided to implement the Coimbatore Eastern Bypass project along with Coimbatore to Karur Expressway. A feasibility study report for the project was prepared in 2018, and it was estimated that it would need a budget of Rs. 7,500 crore. However the project did not show any signs of movement after that.

Underlining the importance of the Eastern Bypass project, industry body CODISSIA's President Karthikeyan recently appealed Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to intervene and order NHAI to expedite this project crucial for development of Coimbatore and West Zone of Tamil Nadu.

Mr.Karthikeyan in his letter, said : Coimbatore Eastern bypass road which is an important Infrastructure project that will decongest Coimbatore City is pending from 2018 at NHAI.

"Coimbatore being the second largest city in TamilNadu has six National Highway roads passing through it, which leads to severe congestion."

"The traffic on the Chengapalli to Salem Highway on NH 544 is increasing every day and it makes the journey longer due to the high volume of trucks and bus to Coimbatore and Kerala. Kindly upgrade this 95 kms stretch into a six lane Expressway for a safe travel which doesn't require any Land acquisition."

"As you are aware of the speed in which MoRTH is executing the projects all over the country, but we are unable to comprehend the situation prevailing in Western Tamil Nadu which is highly urbanized and industrialized part of the State."

"In view of the above, we sincerely request your kind intervention to expedite the execution of the above-mentioned infrastructure projects that is needed to improve the state of affairs in building the Expressways and Highways in this region."
