Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has planned to operate electric buses in Coimbatore and Madurai by the end of 2025, and according to Transport Department officials, preliminary works to operate the e-buses will commence in both cities with partnership from private entities.

The State Government is in plans to replace the diesel-powered buses with CNG and EV models. At present, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation currently operates more than 150 e-buses in Chennai with private partnership, and this has reduced 40% of administrative cost.

TNSTC is planning to operate 100 e-buses in Coimbatore and also do the same in Madurai city. Coimbatore has 17 depots including Uppilipalayam, Marudhamalai, Singanallur, Ondipudur, Karumathampatti, Annur, Mettupalayam, Sungam, Ukkadam, Pollachi, Valparai.Report states that as of now, discussions regarding setting up of charging Stations and in which routes these e-buses should be operated.

 If things go as per plan, we can expect to see e-buses in the city by the end of 2025. It is noteworthy to mention that the e-buses introduced in Chennai could travel up to 200 km on a single charge. They had 39 seats with seat belts,CCTV cameras, LED display to show realtime info on bus stops and also help in cutting down CO2 imapact.
