Land acquisition for the Coimbatore Metro Rail project is expected to begin by the end of May 2025, following the completion of ongoing land survey works. The survey, currently underway in various parts of the city, has been intensified, as the state government is keen to see the project enter construction phase, sources said.
The project, to be executed by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), will be implemented in two corridors under the first phase. Corridor 1, stretching 20.4 km along Avinashi Road, will connect Ukkadam Bus Terminus to Neelambur via Coimbatore International Airport, encompassing 18 stations. Corridor 2, planned along Sathy Road, will cover 14.4 km from Coimbatore Railway Junction to Valiyampalayam Pirivu, with 14 stations. Survey operations are ongoing in these alignment zones.
A report mentions that a majority of the required land parcels are held by various government departments, hence the land acquisition process is expected to go smoothly. Meanwhile, real estate activity has surged across several key localities earmarked for metro development. Property prices have reportedly increased by up to 60% in certain areas, with Ukkadam witnessing a 50% rise, Avinashi Road 40%, Vinayagapuram 60%, and Peelamedu 55%.
