Highways Department officials have reportedly started land survey and marking at Southern side of Annur for the Coimbatore Easter Bypass Project, according to new reports.

Coimbatore Eastern Bypass, proposed for a distance of 81 kms from Narasimhanaickenpalayam to Kaniyur and further till Madukkarai, will link all the six major National Highways in Coimbatore (Mettupalayam road -NH181, Sathyamangalam road -NH948, Avinashi road - NH544, Trichy road -NH81, Pollachi road -NH83 and Palakkad road -NH544.

The project was first announced during the ADMK-regime in 2016. A feasibility study report for the project was prepared in 2018.However the project did not show any signs of movement after that. A report from Dinamalar states that for the last 2 days, highways department official have been involved in land survey and marking at Kittampalayam, Semmipalayam, Semmandampalayam that are at the Southern side of Annur.

Eastern Bypass is expected to be built as a 6-lane road with service roads at a projected cost of Rs.3,750 crore. It starts near Palathurai that is close to L&T bypass and goes on for 81 kms via Palladam, Sulur, Annur Taluks. Along with Coimbatore Western Bypass road, this project too will facilitate alternate route for vehicles traveling to and from Kerala, Nilgiris and other district regions in the outskirts. 

"Together, these three bypasses - Coimbatore Western Bypass (31 km), Eastern Bypass (81 km) and Coimbatore Bypass also called L&T Bypass (27 km) - will connect 11 major roads of Coimbatore - Avinashi Rd., Trichy Rd., Chettipalayam Rd., Pollachi Rd., Palakkad Rd., Siruvani Rd., Thondamuthur Rd., Marudhamalai Rd., Anaikatti Rd., Mettupalayam Rd. and Sathyamangalam Rd.," Sathish, Director, Kongu Global Forum shared.

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) needs to focus on the expansion of Coimbatore Bypass and commence Coimbatore Eastern Bypass while TN State Highways department should expedite Coimbatore Western Bypass works because these 3 major bypass roads are important for the development of Coimbatore District.
