A significant portion of industries in Coimbatore that manufacture regular motors are interested in learning about and developing motors for Electric Vehicles (EVs).

Hence, major industry associations in the district, such as the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA) and the Southern Indian Engineering Manufacturers Association (SIEMA), along with the Scientific and Industrial Testing and Research Center (Si’Tarc) proposed a project to enable MSMEs to gain the know-how to build and test EV components, particularly EV motors.

The proposal was sent to the Tamil Nadu Government several months ago, and it was reported that the government would be responding positively to this request.

Sources shared on Friday that the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Department of the Tamil Nadu Government will soon establish a Common Facility Centre for Electric Vehicle Motor Development and Testing at a cost of Rs. 10 crore in association with Si’Tarc in Coimbatore.

The facility is expected to be established at Si’Tarc’s premises in the city.
