VGM Hospital, Coimbatore in association with Kovai Athletic Club organized the 5th edition of Run For Nation Marathon on Sunday from VOC Grounds. 

 

More than 4000 participants, from ages 8 to 85 took part in the event in various categories. This included close to about 150 differently-abled people participating with great enthusiasm.

 

The Marathon was flagged off by Dr.V.G.Mohan Prasad, Chairman, VGM Hospital; Dr.Suman, Sports Injury Specialist; Dr.Madhura Prasad, Gastroenterologist; VGM Hospital; Dr.Sundarraj, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Surgeon Society; Leema Martin Rose, Director, Martin Group of Companies; Rtn.Maruti, District Governor Elect, RI District 3206; Young Indians Team and other dignitaries.

 

"This is a significant day in Coimbatore as the event has brought together 4000 participants, running for a good cause. Running is a great physical exercise, and as you keep running, you will become healthier everyday and you can also reduce the risks of becoming sick. We all have to run for our nation, and for our own good," Dr.V.G.Mohan Prasad said.

 

Adding more detail, Dr. Suman said that this event is about inclusivity also, and it saw roughly 150 differently-abled people kick-starting the event to the applause of a roaring audience. 

 

Last year, a special emphasis was made on overcoming Obesity at the event. This year the focus fell on the theme 'Save the Knee',as knee-related issues are becoming widespread, and there is a dire need for creating awareness about it among the public.

 

Towards that objective, a medical team of 11 specialists spread medical awarness to 100+ Organizations, Industries, Schools and Colleges regarding the awareness of health, especially for knee health in the last 3 months.

 

Speaking further about the event, he said the 4000+ participants came from 5 South Indian States. They ran in 12 categories. The total cash prize of Rs.1.5 lakhs were given to the winners of the marathon. He also said that there are plans to make it an international event from next year.
